Criminal Origins had just the right mix of that stuff to feel grounded but spooky. My biggest complaint though is centered around the story and the emphasis on the supernatural. The detective stuff was a little more fleshed out too which was cool, but not terribly groundbreaking. Suddenly some random investigative cop that probably knows some basics, became a UFC fighter, which is a bit of an exaggeration, because I don't want to suggest the combat was that much better. In some weird way by improving the combat they ruined the desperate feel the first game nailed so well. The improved combat made combat feel better, but each encounter lost its stake.

I actually remember thinking the melee combat was improved, but the guns were too good and too plentiful. One of the biggest gaming disappointments for me.
